14th – 22nd August 2014
‘It all starts with a dream’ – a group show featuring works by emerging artists and designers: Electra Costa; Laura Bodo Lajiber; Chiashan Lee; Hollie Miller; Kevin Wang and Nick O’Leary. Through a range of media, and through the cross-overs between various disciplines, the exhibition explores the very starting point of creativity. ‘It all starts with a dream’ explores dreaming as a creative tool – a catalyst – for productivity and problem solving, and how daring to dream leads to final creative output. Each exhibitor has answered the brief in differing ways, between them questioning: the idea of belonging; the fine line between fiction and reality; and creativity as escapism. A programme of events exploring different takes on the theme will accompany the exhibition, adding to the discussion and encouraging the viewer to form their own interpretations. This is an RSVP only event, email us at [email protected] for more details and a full programme. I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear x-rays, and I want to smell dark matter. Do you see the absurdity of what I am?” * Speculative Future explores notions of time and space. From London flooding to Sci-fi Cybersensual fantasies, fantastical futures - utopian and dystopian are represented through an array of engaging artworks. The place of humans in this vast, starry expanse is examined through video, collage, painting, drawing and sculptural installations. The exhibition arose in response to an increasing awareness of the uses of science and technology in our lives and an interest in how these uses will evolve over time. People such as Alduos Huxley and George Orwell, who predicted many of the realities which we experience today also influenced the show. Through an open call, artists were invited to submit work relating to the future. All things bizarre, magnificent, time warping and other worldly were considered for this futuristic collection of contemporary art works. Stay ahead of the curve and see what this varied group of artists are speculating about your future. The participating artists are: Morgan Drew, Emily Lazerwitz, Gavin Smith, Hortense Le Calvez, Robin Tarbet, Ondrej Benes, Electra Costa, Jillian Knipe, Alison Shanks, Christiana Kazakou, Katy Wallwork, Elisabeth Blanchet, Fay Mc Closkey, Hayley Harrison, Jessica Wallis, Kay Bainbridge, Edie Jo Murray, Niloufar Brook, Timothy Shepard, Michael Chance & Maria Ves. Speculative Future is the first London based curatorial project by artist, Heather Gray.
